Tarangire National Park – overview

Tarangire National Park is among the best and famous National Parks in Tanzania, located in the northern part of the country. The park is named after the Tarangire River. The Tarangire River flows through the Park, giving wildlife a crucial water source during the dry season. Tarangire National Park covers an area of about 2850 square km. 

The park is known for the availability of the giant Baobab trees and the large Elephant herds along the Tarangire River and the whole Park. In addition to elephants, visitors can spot Giraffes, Lions, Zebras, and many other animals. The park is also home to over 550 species of birds, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Tarangire National Park – Climate

The Tarangire National Park has a unique rainfall pattern. It experiences short rains from November to December, long rains from March to May, and the dry season occurs twice a year, from June to October and from January to February. Tarangire National Park is situated at an altitude between 900 and 1250 meters, and its annual average rainfall ranges from 650 to 700mm.

How to get to Tarangire National Park?

If you want to get to Tarangire National Park, you have two options: Road or Air. If you choose to take the road, you will have to drive 121km from Arusha city. Another option is to catch a flight departing from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Chartered flights are also available from Arusha to Kuro Airstrip, which is located inside the park.

Attractions in Tarangire National Park

Baobab Trees: The park is characterized by its iconic baobab trees, which dot the landscape and create a unique and lovely eye catch. These ancient trees add to the park’s scenic beauty, particularly during sunset and sunrise.

Tarangire River: The Tarangire River is also a popular attraction for tourists who come to explore the park and witness the incredible wildlife in Tarangire National Park. The park is home to large populations of Elephants, which are a common sight throughout the year. Other wildlife found in the park includes Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, Giraffes, Gebras, Wildebeests, Buffalo, and various antelope species.

Game Drive: Game viewing is the most exciting activity; Visitors can anticipate witnessing a diverse range of wildlife., including Elephants, Lions, Zebras, Buffaloes and Giraffes. Birdwatching is another attraction in the park.
