Day 1: Arusha to Momela Gate to Miriakamba Hut

After breakfast, you will meet your crew at the hotel and drive to Arusha National Park. Check-in at the Ngongongare gate, then proceed to our starting point (Momella Gate). After a permit clearance, we start our expedition.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, every group must be escorted by an armed ranger to the camp. Expect to see different species of birds and animals like Buffalos, Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Monkeys, and Antelopes. We provide hot water for washing at the camp before dinner time. Welcome to Mount Meru!

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is short but steep. We take our picnic lunch and continue hiking slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Cone. After lunch at Saddle Hut, we will take a short hike of about 45 minutes to Little Meru (3,820 m). If we arrive at the top before sunset, we can get a superb view of Rhino’s Point, the Meru crater, and the peak of Kilimanjaro in the distance. We return to the camp for an early dinner and rest for the summit night.

Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut
Elevation: 3500m
Hiking Time: 5 hours

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

Wake up around 11 pm and get prepared for the summit. Our summit hike starts around midnight after a light breakfast. Push slowly to Rhino Point 3800 m, then stop for a short break. Continue hiking through the crater ridge, where the trail turns narrow and hard. Whenever you feel physically exhausted, never give up until you reach the summit where you make your dreams come true. Our focus is to arrive at the summit of Meru at 4,566 m during sunrise. If the weather is good at the top, we can see Kilimanjaro Peak from a distance. Take many photos and descend back to Saddle Hut for breakfast/lunch.  After lunch, we descend to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.

Mount Meru FAQ

The best time to trek Mount Meru in Tanzania is during the dry season, from June to October and January to February, to avoid rainy weather and enjoy clear skies for breathtaking views.

While Mount Meru is physically demanding with steep inclines and high altitudes similar to Kilimanjaro, it is typically considered less challenging in terms of duration and altitude, making it a great acclimatization hike before attempting the higher Kilimanjaro summit.

Key highlights of the Mount Meru trekking experience include diverse landscapes, encounters with wildlife such as monkeys and birds, and the opportunity to summit the 5th highest peak in Africa for panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
